How NFTs Have Revolutionised Art Photography

Apologies to Henri Cartier-Bresson

And why it’s time to bypass the gatekeepers

After time spent in the NFT (non-fungible token) market for photography, the traditional gallery system seems antiquated. You are limited to where you live; you have to wait until the exhibition is over until you can take your print home, where it has the potential of being damaged. You have no idea of the work’s edition owners or previous sales. You have to give half the money to the gallery, and good luck trying to sell it in the future.

Making prints of digital art and photography is an uncomfortable ploy to provide something tangible that people can buy. Artificially limiting the edition is often subverted with different sizes and ‘artist proofs’. There is no trust, and as a result, there is no secondary market. A print is wonderful to touch and put on your wall, but it is no longer the primary item of value, much like a JPEG copy.

Prints were the innovation that made our cherished images into cheap pamphlets churned out of the rubber rollers of printing presses or chemical trays. It was a double-edged sword. It made them available to the masses but diluted their value. Instagram and social media made it a hundred-fold worse. If you ever found yourself scrolling through endless images, you have experienced the feeling that they are disposable and worthless.

NFT’s have enabled photography to come full circle. They have the uniqueness of a Daguerreotype and are just as precious. They are a certificate of authenticity enshrined in millions of ledgers across the globe. Unchangeable and unhackable, they are ultimate proof of ownership and can be traded, bought and sold with the speed of the optic fibre-veined internet.

Art connected to an NFT solves countless problems and is alive with benefits. The resulting explosion in popularity has been spectacular. Photography aside, digital artists have made more money in the last three years than in all previous time put together. A five billion dollar industry stands in the place where there was none. Skeptics abound but informed buyers feel confident by absolute transparency. They know to whom, when and how much artworks were sold – providence at the touch of a button. They can see a complete body of work to analyse if a piece is…
