Losing Builds Character
Our country is hurting. It appears many Americans haven’t mastered the art of benefiting from winning OR losing.

There is no record of the admired and award winning actor Billy Dee Williams as having a degree in psychology. He is, however, given credit for the quote “ Failure’s not a bad thing. It builds character. It makes you stronger.”
Variations of the Williams quote is heard repeated by parents of almost every child whose team, for whatever reasons, underperforms and falls into a pattern of losing.
Too much losing is dangerous in all areas of life.
Success:
Humans are motivated and encouraged by success.
Therapists council: success begets success.
Vince Lombardi, the legendary Super Bowl winning coach of the Green Bay Packers, also no psychologist, is credited with a quote on victory as being:
“not everything, the only thing. (Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing)”
The effects of success and failure:
I have an acquaintance who is a high school football coach as well as the school’s guidance counselor. The sending district is in a depressed area of the county.
The man is successful in most areas of his life; he is a high school guidance counselor, head football coach providing for a family of five. He has graduated with honors and was a standout tackle on the football team from a strong Division I University.
His football teams are never particularly successful.
Billy Dee, although your words sound good, I’d like to amend them a bit:
“A little failure is not a bad thing. It builds character; it makes you stronger.”
And Vince, how about:
“Winning isn’t everything. It’s almost the only thing.”
