My Favourite Languages!!!!!!

Hindi, Sanskrit, Punjabi, Turkish, Urdu, English, Korean

Since I found that the topic of the month at Language Hub is Favourite Languages my heart and soul have been badgering my hard-pressed mind and debilitating body to make time out of a hectic schedule and write this article.

Also, I am writing this to clear myself of the charges put by a part of my brain that my love for linguistics is questionable.

Let me know in the comments that I have been proven not guilty after reading this article.

Okay, Let’s begin!

I am a self-taught polyglot with 10 languages already added to my repertoire of language acquisition. I don’t know if using self-taught is appropriate or not because I learned through videos, articles and books. I am currently learning German and I thought that why not learn with the world so, I started Learn German with Me blog. You can check all my other language learning articles here.

I am an Indian living in New Delhi. Delhi is a city disjointed in time. Her every road zoom into a different era. Controversial Mughal monuments, the beautifully preserved gardens of Lodhi’s and Gupta’s, the magnificent baolis, Lutyen’s structured house of power, the unstable jhopdis or stern bungalows.

The amalgamation of Hindustani, Persian, Mughalani and Punjabi cuisines is an allegory of the fact that Delhi has soaked in her the flavour of every era. The Mughal brutality, the British imperialism, the deadly Partition or the receiving quotient of the politics of division harnessed with bourgeois nationalism. Ghazals(a type of poetry), Jai Kara’s(victory hails) or protests. Nastiest betrayals and most passionate love.

What I mean is Delhi is multicultural and honestly most of the people living in Delhi do not have a good idea of a city like Delhi. So I set myself on the conquest of learning about my city, her people and her unknown curves. That is how I started learning languages to be able to make genuine conversations with people.

Today I’ll talk about the five languages closest to my heart.

Punjabi is my first language. It has an imperative tone. Since it is my mother tongue, a sense of pride and affinity is associated with it. It is the BEST for insults. Insults without anything sexually inappropriate.

It is more powerful than saying F*ck, Mother F*cker or a D*ck.

Punjabi is carefree. Like my mother often scolds me for not eating healthy food. And while force-feeding me she says, “ਮਰਜਾ!” which means Die!

It is an expression of love. Carefree, imperative and rowdy!

Sanskrit is one of the ancient languages. I learnt Sanskrit in school. It has a royal tone. Like if you say —

It seems like a saint is preaching. Everything in Sanskrit seems like a life lesson.
Sanskrit is rational with its sentence structure. It is flexible and extremely sorted. My understanding of sentence structures has been enhanced because of Sanskrit. And I may not be able to speak Sanskrit casually since very few people in modern India use Sanskrit for conversations. Still, whenever I want to decipher the word order for any new language
I think in Sanskrit and it becomes 100x easier. Language evolves through time but with Sanskrit, it seems like a linguistics scholar sat down and crafted it like a mathematical model. It is so fascinating that it is an ancient language yet so accurate.

Derived from Sanskrit. Hindi has a cool and soft tone. It gives you a sense of sincerity. For example —

But shouchalaya doesn’t seem like a word for washroom instead to me it feels like a name of a boring brand spelt wrong. Isn’t so?

Just like Punjabi Hindi also categorises everything into two genders. Its grammar is not that difficult. Urdu is a sister tongue to Hindi. The major difference is the written script. Else, Urdu rightfully boasts its aesthetics and every damn thing sounds respectful in Urdu.

Two new age songs I like in Hindi —

Two songs I love! —

Meaning —

May I blend in your soil(mother India)
Like a flower may I bloom
This is my only desire
May I flow through your(mother India) rivers
swing through your(mother India) fields
This is my only desire…

My favourite lines are—

Oh my beloved mother
What is for you to worry? Why are tears rolling down from your eyes like a cascading stream?
You always say that I am your Moon and the Moon never dies!

Meaning —

Turkish is poetically aggressive. What I mean is that it has beautiful words and expressions which are expressed best with sharp hand movements and voice modulations. In contrast, Korean is a poetically delicate language. For eg

Turkish creates a rhythm. Though that happens with every language some languages exert a stronger spell. Turkish is one of those.

Another thing I love about Turkish is that it is gender-neutral. He/she/it/ they everyone is expressed by just ‘O’. Super efficient and ceases the chance of discrimination through a language based on gender.

My two favourite songs are —

English is one of the languages I have studied formally. English has helped me understand the do’s and don’ts of language learning.
English is obdurate and inflexible but it has one of the vastest vocabularies a language could ever have and that makes up for its inelastic nature.
It has a fancy tone. For eg —

Now try saying that in any other language and you’ll know why I am saying English is fancy.
Also, English words are relatively easier to pronounce than all the other languages I mentioned in this article.

And that’s all! Thank you so much for reading! Do share your favourite languages.
