Whole grains, prayer, and siblings on the harvest festival of 14 January

The festival of day the sun transitions into Capricorn is celebrated across India with whole grains as a running theme across states.

The jaggery-based rice-and-lentil dish is to the top left, below it is the salty rice-and-lentil dish, and the two cookie-like items on the right are lentil-based deep-fried snacks.

Once we’ve cooked and eaten the special dishes of the day, we usually go to work! Sankranthi is not usually a calendar holiday for most. The stock market remains open as usual, as do banks, offices, and schools.

The day after Sankranthi is the festival that’s interesting to me, though.

Kanu is a festival where we offer leftover grains of the previous day to the birds, with a prayer with each morsel we lay out for them: “May the people born in our generation prosper!”

That’s me, on the terrace of my house, laying out the food for the birds.

Once this food is laid out, the belief is that we are in “Kanu Theetu”.
