NO MORE FEAR FOR CHANGE

It has been a week and a half in a coding boot camp and I have learned a lot so far. My learning journey in this boot camp is through challenges because that is what boot camps come for; it goes beyond simulation to make us more challenged so as to be prepared for the real outside battle. It was not easy to learn all that we have learned, in a limited period of time.

A day at boot camp was like a minute in the real world. We could come to the workplace; meet daily activities awaiting us. In addition to daily activities, there is applying feedback, correcting all the mistakes and add what you didn’t manage from the previous day. Every morning, our Learning Facilitation Assistants (LFA) would ask us to report what we have been doing and what we are going to do. Oh, La La…. Sometimes all these overwhelm a person; when you don’t take a deep breath and account for your time, at the end of the day you will have nothing. Successful people overcame challenges in a shorter time than others; successful learners should start by learning in shorter than expected. This is what kept motivating us because there is a category of people we want to be like; we had to start practicing as their life practices.

There was no problem with time if we had a few concepts to learn. However, we had a lot of topics to cover amongst which were new to some of us. To some others, the topics were kind of familiar and they just needed to simulate the workplace. At the end of the day, the expectations from us were the same. At some point, we all have met new technologies, new teammates, new structures and new leaders to work with. Regardless of the different backgrounds that we had and the individual speed of learning, we still had to follow the instructions. Different backgrounds needed ground rules so that we may come to attain a common goal. We set ground rules that may help us to lead to the same point, but remember, it needs time to adapt to those rules for whomever new to them. The time for adaptation was not available which increases the pressure forcefully feel the changes. Of course, the impact is not the same for we accommodate differently. Some boot campers have taken this all the challenges to be an opportunity of learning, others would drop out.

Challenges are not for any bad, they are just for us to see things from another perspective; in life, you never know where challenges will come from. Wherever you will go you won’t be meeting the people you already know and you won’t be led by the leaders that you had before, neither will you always have time for everything. In software development, there are different stakeholders and they come with different backgrounds as well as expectations. Their expectations do not depend on the developers and if you don’t learn how to satisfy them by passing simulation challenges, it will be difficult for you when it comes to real projects. It needs you to create a room for the changes we meet. Changing the situation instead of them changing you is the goal and motive of developers.

It is always challenging to adapt to changes and challenges when you have limited time, but it is possible. With a growth mindset and stakeholder management skill; adapt to changes in a short period of time is very possible. Challenges are not bad things, make sure you have a room for them and learn from them. And remember, ask whenever you are not confident about the information you have.
