The Art Of Learning

Learning is probably the most important part of our growth process as humans. We can never out grow the active process of learning. But as important as learning is, even more important is what and how we learn. There is what we like to call the evolution of learning.

Evolution-gradual development: the gradual development of something into a more complex or better form.
Learning-acquiring of knowledge: the acquisition of knowledge or skill.

The general population of the human species understand and practice the concept of learning. It started all the way from the cave men down to the 21st century global man. From making crude tools to maximizing cotton for clothing purposes, we continue to learn. There is a need to conform into the mold of society and civilization century after century. Soon, as acquiring knowledge became the norm, counter knowledge started surfacing. People started questioning everything. Is the earth really flat? Can a rocket really shoot through space? With more questions, came more answers and with each correct and proven answer came a greater need to relearn and unlearn.

Though learning is not really a complex exercise, the constant need for it makes it worrisome, sort of like an unavoidable pain. We are driven out of our comfort zones every time we need to experience a new aspect of life through learning.

Soon the idea of reading and writing became wildly accepted. You are regarded to as literate once you know how to spell, read and pronounce your name. It became a wall to scale. The need and the benefits cannot be over spoken of. You are literate since you can read all the words I’ve strung together to form this article.

Through global and personal efforts, there is a great change in the statistical records of literacy especially in Africa. It is easy to sleep at night as a parent when you are aware that your child has a secured future because he goes to school and is actively learning to survive in the shark world of money making.

Then you wake up one day stressed out from your late night game night with the kid you love, turn on your notifications and you see:

You stand up and try to focus on your morning routine, but you just couldn’t shake a bad feeling off, you are aware it has to do with the post you just read. Then it hits you “Tomorrow is for your kid. He grows up to live in tomorrow!” That is an example of the evolution of learning. The world is quickly tilting away from their previous idea of literacy. That is a learning evolution. The standards have shifted and now it’s all about writing computer programs.
What joy it would be when you are certain of your tomorrow. It’s not entirely our fault that the world is shifting in perspective, it used to be the bigger the better, now it’s the smaller the more effective. Technology has moved from creating bigger computers to making faster computers. Now the stroke of the keyboard is mightier than the pen and here we are talking about our kids waking up to the reality of the new world, a world of screens and keyboards. Certainly, they need more than the ability to read and write, they need the ability to fit into the new community.

The expectations for these kids are high especially when placed side by side with their ‘counterparts’ in other countries. However, there is no level playing field and yet the same results are expected. There is a need to chisel out the playing field and that need is teaching and learning. Codenonia Codecamp Series is out to level out the playing field by teaching kids how to speak the language of the new world: coding.
