What is Jira?

Have you ever heard of Jira before? I’ve noticed it on a couple Software Developer job postings, and much more on QA type roles. I thought it would be good to do a little research on the subject and get a general idea of what Jira is and what it is used for.

Jira is a bug and issue tracking tool used by software teams to find, record and track bugs in their software. Once you identify a bug, your team can create a ticket/issue and add details such as descriptions, severity, level, screenshots, version, and more. One project can hold many different types of issues, or just one.

Once a ticket is created you can rank and prioritize based on the importance and urgency of the issue, and teams workload capacity. You can track bugs and issues through your teams workflow, and transitioning issues will trigger notifications. Notifications can also be modified to contact the correct team member for a specific type of issue. Jira uses a powerful filter and visualization tool that can be used to locate issues and create a subset of issues in a specific project or a specific data point across multiple projects.

Tools in Jira such as job boards and dashboard gadgets make project tracking so much easier. I hope this little description gave you a general idea of what Jira is incase you are asked during an interview, or it comes up in the workplace. I will be sure to include a brief video that will briefly explain Jira in under 5 minutes.
