Major Expectations For the Surge

As Major II was ending, many questions regarding Seattle’s future began to rise. With many calling for them to blow it up, head coach Sam “Fenix” opted to get ahead of the curve and announce no roster changes. At the time, many wondered if it was the right decision and questioned where things went so wrong from Major I. In the background however, was a resurgence brewing that not many would predict.

Going into week one of Major III, Seattle was a team that many found hard to rank. Their Major I performance placed them as a top contender, but their Major II performance said otherwise. Fresh off of the break, Seattle swept the Minnesota Rokkr while winning their first SnD since the first major. The SnD win was much needed as the Surge were on the cusp of setting the record for most consecutive SnD losses. Seattle would then return to a winning form over the rest of the qualifiers going 3–1 in their last 4 matches to secure the first seed.

While the major qualifiers showed a much improved Surge performance, it didn’t come without controversy. After a 1–1 result during week 2, and poor performances from Accuracy, speculation began to rise on whether or not a roster change was imminent. Comments from TacticalRab and Aches were fueling the fire and it felt like the community was rather split. The Surge camp reiterated their belief and trust in the Ice Man’s play and in week 3 he seemingly proved them right. Accuracy posted back to back positive performances and even got a player of the match nod from BreakingPoint.

Seattle starts of Major III in winners bracket facing the Los Angeles Guerrillas. The Guerrillas looked improved in week 3 following wins against the Florida Mutineers and an upset victory against the Las Vegas Legion. Like the Surge, the Guerrillas have had a better showing in search going 5–3 this split. This will be their second time matching up with LAG winning their first matchup 3–2. With a retooled search, Seattle looks to have the edge in this series and may be poised for a deep tournament run but with possibly the most competitive winners bracket we’ve seen this season, anything truly could happen.
